For Claude Code, pick Sentry MCP if errors come first: it is on Sentry's free plan and reads issues with their stack traces, breadcrumbs and traces. Pick Datadog MCP if your team already pays for Datadog: it reads logs, metrics, traces, monitors and incidents. No monitoring yet? Start with a monitoring tool, such as Fixter, which Claude Code sets up for you.

Both vendors run a hosted MCP server and ship an official Claude Code plugin. We checked both against Datadog's and Sentry's own docs, repos and pricing pages on October 21, 2026, and cite them inline. Fixter is our product; it comes up in the opening and in the section for teams with no monitoring yet. The Datadog and Sentry comparison itself names no winner beyond what each is best for.

Datadog MCP vs Sentry MCP at a glance

An MCP server is how Claude Code talks to another tool. These two let it read your production data in Datadog or Sentry, and change some of it. If the term is new, start with what an MCP server is.

What can Datadog MCP do in Claude Code?

Datadog's MCP server is remote, run by Datadog, and generally available since March 2026.1 Its default toolset, core, reads logs, metrics, traces and spans, monitors, incidents, dashboards, hosts, services, events and RUM data. Everything else is an opt-in toolset you add with a toolsets parameter on the endpoint URL: error tracking, synthetics, APM, database monitoring, security, Kubernetes, profiling and more, or toolsets=all for every one that is generally available.2

Datadog's MCP server can also write. There are tools to create monitors, update error tracking issues, edit dashboards and synthetic tests, and even core can create notebooks.2 Write tools only appear when your org turns on MCP Write Access and your user has the mcp_write permission; reading needs MCP Access on the org and mcp_read, both in Datadog's Standard Role.4 Datadog states fair-use limits of 50 requests per 10 seconds and 100,000 tool calls a month.3 It works on the US1, US3, US5, EU, AP1, AP2 and UK1 sites, not on the government sites.4

How to add Datadog MCP to Claude Code

The official plugin is in preview and needs Claude Code 2.1.30 or later.5 Beyond the server, it adds five skills: /ddsetup to connect, /ddconfig, /ddtoolsets to pick toolsets, /ddviz for charts (macOS only), and one that scaffolds a Datadog App.5 Sign-in is OAuth by default; a personal or service access token, or an API key with an application key, also work.4

Datadog
# official plugin (preview), inside Claude Code
/plugin install datadog@claude-plugins-official

# or the server alone, in a terminal; Datadog's setup page shows
# the endpoint for your site (US1, US3, US5, EU, AP1, AP2, UK1)
claude mcp add --transport http datadog-mcp <your Datadog MCP endpoint>

# extra toolsets go on the endpoint URL, for example
# ?toolsets=error-tracking,synthetics

What does Datadog MCP cost?

The pricing page lists the MCP server without a separate price.6 What you pay for is the data it reads, product by product. At list prices billed yearly: log ingestion is $0.10 per GB plus $1.06 per million logs indexed with 3 day retention, APM is $31 per host a month, Infrastructure Pro $15 per host, and Error Tracking $25 a month for the first 50,000 errors.6 The MCP server is not available on Datadog's free tier, which covers infrastructure only; Datadog offers a 14 day trial of the whole suite.7 We work through what a small team's bill adds up to in Datadog alternatives for small teams.

What can Sentry MCP do in Claude Code?

Sentry runs a hosted MCP server at mcp.sentry.dev, and every connection signs in with OAuth.8 Sentry MCP's tools come in groups Sentry calls skills. The read-only group searches issues, errors, traces, logs, metrics and replays, and opens an issue with its stack trace and breadcrumbs, a trace with its spans, or your uptime monitors. A second group asks Seer, Sentry's AI, to analyse an issue.9

Sentry MCP has two write groups: triage resolves, assigns and annotates issues, and project management creates projects, DSNs, teams, alert rules and uptime monitors. You choose groups with ?skills= or ?disable-skills= on the URL.9 The hosted server is for sentry.io. For self-hosted Sentry, run the open-source server locally with your own host and token; Seer is left out there, since self-hosted Sentry does not include it.9 Sentry publishes no rate limit for the server.

How to add Sentry MCP to Claude Code

The official plugin bundles the hosted server with eight skills, among them getting started, instrumenting your app, debugging an issue, fixing stack traces, creating alerts and setting up releases.10 It has no slash commands of its own. If you only want the server, one line adds it.8

Sentry
# official plugin, inside Claude Code
/plugin install sentry@claude-plugins-official

# or the server alone, in a terminal; org and project in the path are optional
claude mcp add --transport http sentry https://mcp.sentry.dev/mcp
# then run /mcp inside Claude Code to sign in

# self-hosted Sentry: run the server locally instead
npx @sentry/mcp-server@latest --access-token=<token> --host=sentry.example.com

What does Sentry MCP cost?

MCP access is on the free Developer plan: one user, 5,000 errors, 5 GB of logs, 50 replays and one uptime monitor a month. Team is $26 a month billed yearly or $29 monthly, with unlimited users; Business is $80 yearly or $89 monthly.11 Seer is a paid add-on at $40 a month per active contributor, which Sentry counts as anyone with two or more pull requests to a repo where Seer is on.12 For the wider picture, see Sentry alternatives.

Can you use both?

Yes. Claude Code connects to as many MCP servers as you add and picks tools from all of them.13 Plenty of teams already split it this way: Sentry for errors, Datadog for infrastructure and logs. Two things help. Name the tool in your question when it matters ("check Sentry for new issues since the deploy"), and switch on only the Datadog toolsets and Sentry skills you use, so Claude has a shorter list to choose from.

Before you connect either, decide what Claude may change. Both act with your permissions. On Datadog, leave MCP Write Access off or use a read-only role; on Sentry, leave out the triage and project management skills. Query results pass through the vendor's server into your Claude session.

Do you need either if you have no monitoring yet?

An MCP server only reads data that is already there. If you have no monitoring yet, neither server helps on its own: you are picking a monitoring tool, and the MCP server comes with it. Three honest options for a small team:

  • Sentry, if errors are what you need first. The free plan includes MCP, and the plugin can instrument your app for you.
  • Datadog, only if you expect to need most of its products. You pay per product and per host, so it is rarely where a small team starts.
  • One tool that covers errors, logs, traces and uptime and that you set up and run from Claude Code. That is what we build.

Fixter is ours, so weigh this with that in mind. Fixter finds and fixes the issues in your app in production, from your coding agent: errors, failing infrastructure, slow requests and downtime. It finds the root cause and fixes it: in your agent over MCP, or as a pull request ready for your review. Nothing to learn, built for small teams. Your app sends logs, traces and metrics over standard OpenTelemetry, with no Fixter SDK, and alerts reach you by email or Slack.14

Fixter
# paste this into Claude Code and it does the whole setup:
Read fixter.dev/llms.txt and set up Fixter.

# or connect the server alone, in a terminal
claude mcp add fixter --transport http https://mcp.fixter.dev
# then run /mcp inside Claude Code to sign in

Querying over MCP is free on every plan. Free plan. Paid from €20 a month.15 Where it falls short: there is no self-hosted option, and it is a younger, smaller product than Datadog or Sentry. If your team already lives in one of those, adding its MCP server is less work than moving. For eight other servers side by side, see monitoring MCP servers for Claude Code, compared, and if you are picking a first error tracker, error tracking for small teams.

Key takeaways

  • Both are hosted MCP servers with an official Claude Code plugin; Datadog's plugin is in preview
  • Sentry MCP is strongest on errors and works on the free plan
  • Datadog MCP reads much more, but only data you already pay Datadog for
  • Both can change things in your account; turn write access off if you only want Claude reading
  • No monitoring yet? Pick the monitoring tool first; its MCP server comes with it

Frequently asked questions

Datadog MCP or Sentry MCP: which is better for Claude Code?

Use the one for the tool your data is already in. Sentry's is the better fit for errors: issues with stack traces and breadcrumbs, traces, logs and replays, and it works on Sentry's free plan. Datadog's reads far more (logs, metrics, traces, monitors, incidents, dashboards and opt-in toolsets for error tracking, synthetics and more), but only for data you already pay Datadog to keep.

Is the Datadog MCP server free?

There is no separate charge for it; you pay for the Datadog data it reads. Datadog's pricing page lists the MCP server without a price of its own, with fair-use limits of 50 requests per 10 seconds and 100,000 tool calls a month. You pay for the Datadog products it reads, such as logs per GB and APM per host. It is not available on Datadog's free tier; Datadog offers a 14 day trial of the full product suite.

Does Sentry MCP work on the free plan?

Yes. Sentry's free Developer plan lists MCP access. It covers one user, 5,000 errors, 5 GB of logs, 50 replays and one uptime monitor a month. Seer, Sentry's AI analysis, is a paid add-on at $40 per active contributor a month.

How do I add Datadog MCP to Claude Code?

Inside Claude Code, run /plugin install datadog@claude-plugins-official, or add the server alone with claude mcp add --transport http datadog-mcp and the endpoint for your Datadog site. Your Datadog org needs MCP Access turned on, and your user needs the mcp_read permission.

How do I add Sentry MCP to Claude Code?

Inside Claude Code, run /plugin install sentry@claude-plugins-official, or add the server alone with claude mcp add --transport http sentry https://mcp.sentry.dev/mcp, then run /mcp and sign in with your Sentry account.

Can I use Datadog MCP and Sentry MCP together?

Yes. Claude Code can connect to both at once and picks tools from each. A common split is Sentry for errors and Datadog for infrastructure. Turn on only the Datadog toolsets and Sentry skills you use, so Claude has fewer tools to choose from.

Can Datadog MCP or Sentry MCP change things in my account?

Both can. Datadog has write tools for monitors, dashboards, notebooks, error tracking issues and synthetic tests, shown only when your org turns on MCP Write Access. Sentry has triage tools to resolve and assign issues and project tools to create projects, DSNs, alert rules and uptime monitors, which you can leave out with the skills parameter on the URL.

Once a server is connected, the next step is the same for both: how to connect Claude Code to your logs and what to ask first.
